History


Well-known for its Victorian terraces, period buildings and red-brick exteriors, Marylebone is an area steeped in history. Dating back to 1086, the borough’s development spans 700 years. 

At the turn of the 18th century, much of the area had undergone extensive development, transforming this once-quiet village into the treasured grandeur recognised now. Today, Marylebone is managed by two visionary estates, the Howard de Walden Estate and the Portman Estate.

Beyond the enduring heritage of the district’s buildings, Marylebone has one of the city’s oldest elm trees, aged over 150 years old, which survived widespread elm disease, inner city developments and a nearby World War Two bomb.

Famous past residents include Charles Dickens, Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon, who, alongside Paul McCartney, wrote their famous track ‘Yesterday’ in 57 Wimpole Street.

Transport


Conveniently connected to central London, Marylebone has excellent transport links. There is an overground mainline station and bus routes across central London.

Stations with underground tube lines, including Central, Bakerloo, Jubilee, Hammersmith & City, District, Circle and Victoria lines, offer transport to all four corners of the inner and outer city. Nearby Bond Street underground connects to Heathrow Airport or to Paris via the Eurostar.
